Steve's first taste of oval racing was at Bristol in an F2 in the mid eighties in the borrowed off Geoff Bunn Black Rose car.
a good start qualifying for the final but sadly not making the finish but the seed was sown.
Having just bought a house and child on the way It was a few years before Steve bought Geoff Bunns old self built car, racing it when finances permitted.
That car was sold on and Steve set about building his own Forsyth type car and like many, it was built on a tight budget with Hillman Imp coil overs on the front and a standard Pinto Gt exhaust manifold. Steve placed well at Brafield and Stoke and the odd Swindon before selling the car on to Lee Guinchard whose dad said he wanted him out in a strong car which he promptly rolled it at his first meeting.
Steve then bought another car off Geoff Bunn ( brother in law ). This car was built by Empress racing and was a good car and took Steve to the winners circle and to yellow grade.
In the late 90's Cliff Bunn discoveredAlwalton Raceway so Steve,Cliff and Geoff swapped camps and raced at Alwalton Supastox
which were basically F2 on slick trees and little contact no hard bumpering as it was a very fast track, during one of these meetings these little racing cars appeared, Grand Prix Midgets. So looking for a change from F2 Steve watched them race and liked the look of them and the wide varieties of cars racing. Cliff was first he bought an early Fireball and Steve bought a Dastle and Geoff bought John Salters car .
Steve made his debut at Brafield at the Midgets 2005 World Final.
After reasonable success with the Dastle he built his own rear engine car when it was just coming good a stuck full on throttle at Great Yarmouth put him out of racing for nearly a year.
Not long after that he purchased the Cheetah of Dave Bonser which he got on very well with but has been troublesome recently with a struggle to source a reliable engine to suit.
Over the years in the club, Steve has won the Bill Boarer 3 times and set a few fast laps. Still enjoy the racing and the friendships formed from short Oval racing over the years.
